About Hallowe'en
While Saint Patrick's Day is almost certainly the best known as a specifically Irish festival, Hallowe'en also has it's origins amongst the Celts and most likely originated in Ireland as Samhain centuries before the arrival of Christianity in the British Isles.
"Samhain Night" marked the end of summer when the dead would come back to the mortal world, so the Celts would light large bonfires to ward off evil spirits.
In 835 A.D. Pope Gregory IV set November 1st as "All Hallows' Day", and over time, Samhain came to be called "All Hallows' Even" or Hallowe'en.
While Hallowe'en is most popular in Ireland, it was imported to the United States and Canada in the 19th century by Irish and Scottish immigrants. With nearly two million Irish immigrants coming to North America during the Irish Potato Famine between 1845 to 1849, how Hallowe'en took root so strongly is easier to understand.
Today Hallowe'en retains much of it's ancient imagery of fire, death, the undead, and the underworld with jack-o'-lanterns, ghosts, goblins, witches, skeletons, demons and other dark symbols adorning schools, houses, and business establishments. Hallowe'en is second only to Christmas in the United States as a revenue generating holiday for retailers.
